Well, just informed the Parental Units of the reasons behind the impending move. It was tremendously encouraging looking forward, but also difficult looking back. It comes down to the types of people we surrounded ourselves with during undergrad and the lack of quality individuals available en masse in SoCal. As much as my parents have themselves convinced otherwise, the OC is "the OC" and art has indeed mirrored reality.
It certainly has been a painful lesson, learning how essential deep/natural/nearby friendships are. Sunshiney weather and well-meaning family members cannot replace the multiple friends who walk alongside during life's unexpected situations and circumstances. The precious few folks who we found nearby have since moved (they've lived elsewhere before), and it doesn't make much sense to continue searching for a (non-existant?) needle when there's another (more promising) haystack to peruse. Diligence and perseverance have their places, but then there's also foolishness and stupidity. (A joke involving a flood, God, and a rowboat/life preserver/helicopter comes to mind)
I'm looking forward to actually living in the same time zone as those who've endeavored to walk with us through these past couple years, not to mention the great opportunity to meet a bunch of new (potential) quality companions. The Philosophress has done her part; my next 2-4 weeks are going to be pretty crazy as I get the "job vision" goggles honed to the right place(s). Wish me (us) luck!
